Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai: Prada and Wong Kar Wai Built Shanghai’s Most Cinematic Restaurant

Inside a restored 1918 mansion in Jing’an, Prada has opened its first standalone fine-dining room in Asia, and it hired the director of In the Mood for Love to set the scene.

Fashion houses have opened cafés before. None of them has done it quite like this. Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai is Prada’s first standalone fine-dining space in Asia, set inside a grand 1918 villa on North Shaanxi Road in Shanghai, and it was created in collaboration with Wong Kar Wai, the filmmaker whose moody, lantern-lit romances defined a generation of cinema. The result feels less like a restaurant than a film set you are allowed to step into, then stay for dinner.

The house itself, Rong Zhai, was once home to the industrialist Rong Zongjing. Prada spent years restoring it before reopening it in 2017 as a cultural space for exhibitions and events. Now its second floor belongs to Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai, which serves an all-day café and a fine-dining restaurant that bridges two great food cultures, Milan and Shanghai.

Less a restaurant than a film set you are allowed to step into, then stay for dinner.

A dining room directed by Wong Kar Wai

Wong Kar Wai built the space around an idea he calls tête-bêche: mirrored and inverted forms, pairs that reflect and reverse each other, just as Milan and Shanghai do here. Rooms follow their original purpose in the villa, filled with pieces from Prada’s art collections set against fine Chinese antiques. The most cinematic moment comes in a corridor lit in a slow, rhythmic pulse that recalls In the Mood for Love, lined with traditional woodblock prints from the Rising Clouds, Blooming Flowers series, created with the Duo Yun Xuan Art Center. Walking it before dinner feels like the opening scene of a film.

Milan meets Shanghai on the plate

The kitchen is led by Executive Chef Riccardo La Perna, with Pastry Chef Diego Crosara in charge of desserts, and the menu is a true conversation between Italian and Chinese traditions, with ingredients, flavors and techniques woven together rather than simply placed side by side. Come in the afternoon for coffee and pastry in the café, or book an evening for the full fine-dining experience. The cooking has already caught attention: Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai is included in the MICHELIN Guide 2026 for Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

Cocktails by Remy Savage

The bar has its own headliner. Mixologist Remy Savage, known for his design-led, conceptual approach to cocktails, leads the beverage program, and his debut menu tells the story of Rong Zhai itself in 16 signature drinks, arranged across four thematic chapters. It is the rare cocktail list worth reading cover to cover before you order.

More than a meal

Upstairs, the third floor is home to the Apartment, a private Prada space with exclusive products and bespoke services, and the villa hosts art exhibitions and events through the year, so a visit can easily stretch into an afternoon. Jing’an is one of Shanghai’s most walkable districts, with leafy lanes, boutiques and the Jing’an Temple close by, and the Bund is a short taxi ride away.

For travelers who believe great meals are about more than food, Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai may be the most memorable table in Shanghai: equal parts art house, fashion house and dining room.
